Important Tips For First Time Travel Nurses

Find an experienced agency and recruiter:

Some travel nursing agencies are known for high pay, some for having the most options,
some for going the extra mile in all situations, and a few are a combination of all three.
When looking for a recruiter within an agency, it’s often best to find one that can relate to your unique personality

Get Organized:

Whether you are browsing or getting ready to embark on a first-time travel nursing adventure, it’s important to stay organized. Ensure your license information is updated and your health and immunization records are up to date. Prepare for your phone interview and bring any necessary documentation on your first day.

Educate Yourself:

There are many social media groups, travel nursing websites, and blogs, as well as other experienced
travel nurses, to answer your questions. Understand how the process works to make informed decisions.

Be Flexible:

It is important to keep an open mind when it comes to location and also remember that many places across Canada are incredible to discover. With more experience comes an enhanced ability to be selective about where you work.

Gather knowledge of your travel location:

Gather as much information as possible about your travel location. If you know anyone that has spent significant time there, ask as many questions as possible. Browse online
and learn relevant details about the area. Moving to unknown locations can be daunting; filling in your gaps of knowledge about the area and locating friends and relatives close by can often ease the difficulty and foster a unique and rewarding experience.

Pack Smart:

Most travel nurse assignments are between 2-6 weeks, so think of what you will likely need for the expected time frame. Also, remember to take outfits that you would use to have an adventure during your travel nursing assignment.

House hunting:

As a travel nurse, you have the option of either finding living accommodations or relying on your travel nurse agency to arrange this for you.  Regardless, it is always best to make arrangements for living as close as possible to the facility location of your intended assignment

Get your home in order:

It is wise to make preparations for how you will run your home and daily activities while you are away. Do you have any pending deliveries? Should you have your mail forwarded? Do you have a plant or pet that needs to be cared for? Make adequate preparations on how to take care of things at home before traveling to your new location.

Arrive early on your first day:

You only get one opportunity to make a good first impression. Give yourself plenty of
time to arrive at work (and it is best to arrive early).

Build relationships with your co-workers:

One of the easiest ways to settle well into a new place as a first-time travel nurse is to get to know your co-workers and make friends with them. Try to get to know them, invite them to activities and try to maintain a positive relationship with them. Having even one friend will go a long way to making your first-time experience as a travel nurse more comfortable and successful.

Stay connected to your recruiter:

Check-in with your recruiter from time to time, keep him or her posted about your assignment and if you have certain things you want out of your travel assignment, be sure to share these items with your recruiter. Getting started as a travel nurse can be a wonderful change that comes with many rewards, adventures, and new friends. With a little preparation, you are ready to make your debut as a travel nurse a smooth and successful experience.
